ABOUT HUMPBACK WHALES
Average length and weight of adult whales are about 40 ~ 50ft, 30 ~ 40t.
The body line is curved and flipper’s length is about one third of their total body length.
Although the top of the tail is black, the bottom can vary in color including black, white or spotted.
Those color patterns are useful for identifying them.
Humpback whales live along the coast most of the year,
However, they migrate about 3200 miles to mate and breed in the warm ocean in winter,
and to feed in the cold ocean in summer.
Mother whales take care of their calves for 10 ~ 12 months.
However the relationships between other whales are temporary.
During the mating and breeding season, whales do not feed and concentrate on courtship, mating, giving birth and raising.
Male whales become very aggressive and fight for females’ attention.
Another characteristic behavior related to mating/breeding is the males’ “Song”.
It consists of refrains of low and high tones that last for 6 to 35 minutes.
The “Song” is sung only by adult males.
It is thought that the “Song” is used for their courtship and territorial display.
